Italy is located in Southern Europe, and comprises the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. Italy shares its northern alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. Italy enjoys a predominantly Mediterranean climate with a colder Alpine climate in the mountains to the north and a hot, dry climate in the south. The population of Italy 58.7million. The national language is Italian. The capital city is Rome, and major cities include Florence, Milan, Venice, Naples.
Italy is a Republic, and member of the European Union. The national currency is the Euro. Italy has the 21st highest GDP in the world, at $28,760 and the 18th HDI.
